Berenyi team works on Symrise Clean Room interior mezzanine.

CHARLESTON, SC – Berenyi, South Carolina’s leading industrial and commercial design- build firm, announces that it is moving forward with the next phase of construction to retrofit Symrise’s current facility in Goose Creek, SC, and build a cleanroom environment that accommodates the global manufacture’s first fully automated filling station in North America. Construction commenced last fall after Berenyi completed the design phase of its multi-year contract awarded in 2020 by Symrise, a global food additives and fragrance company with facilities here in the Lowcountry.

“Food safety is paramount in all we do, and we know that it takes state-of-the art facilities, designed for optimal safety and cleanliness to meet our high standards,” said Dr. Chacy Richey, Senior Director Supply Chain AM/CI, North America. “We turned to Berenyi, a long-time Symrise partner, to take this project from concept to completion because their team mirrors our same standards of excellence,” she added.

This new completely automated filling line will package more than 14 different products in a sterile, cleanroom environment to ensure the absolute best quality products reach Symrise customers and consumers. This fully automated food-grade filling station will be capable of filling 55gal drum, pails, and IBC containers, and it will also palletize, label, and strap the finished packaged units once filling is complete. This filling station will have three total product lines: two for 55 gal drums and IBC containers and one for 25kg pails. Once complete, this highly complex system will be capable of packaging 40 drums per hour, and up to 240 pails per hour. Construction is scheduled to be completed and the facility fully operational by September 2023.

“It is incredibly rewarding to be working on a project that ensures only quality products leave the Port of Charleston for destinations across the globe,” said Jordan Behringer, Berenyi’s managing partner and the lead on the Symrise Cleanroom project. “Our team is honored to be leading this project, and we value the relationship we’ve built with Symrise over the years.”

Berenyi’s team of experts serve as the project’s lead architect, structural engineer, and construction manager. Additional project partners include Bushy Park, Goose Creek, SC, Live Oak Consultants, North Charleston, SC, which performed the MEP engineering, and UltraPure Technologies, based in Suwanee, GA, which designed the clean room environment that will house the filling equipment.

Since 1989 Berenyi has played an integral role in South Carolina’s burgeoning industrial growth, leading design-build projects for local and regional clients as well as global manufactures, including Boeing, Nucor, Mercedes and Symrise. A full-service partner, the Berenyi team includes veteran architects, seasoned engineers, and capable project managers as it takes client projects from concept to completion. Berenyi is headquartered along the banks of the Cooper River in Charleston and has an office in Sumter, SC to better service clients beyond the Low Country.
